TO BE DELIVERED TO: The Archdiocese of New York, Diocese of Albany, Diocese of Brooklyn, Diocese of Buffalo, Diocese of Ogdensburg, Diocese of Rochester, Diocese of Rockville Centre and Diocese of Syracuse
PETITION TO: We demand that the Catholic Church immediately release their secret files of predator priests. These files contain important information for victims of clergy sexual abuse which will help victims determine whether they can file a claim under the New York Child Victims Act. The window to file lawsuits opens on August 14, 2019.
BACKGROUND: On February 14, 2019, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the Child Victims Act, which grants a one-year limited filing window for childhood victims of sexual abuse to seek justice in the New York State Courts. For decades, the Catholic Church in New York has maintained a secret database containing information about accused priests, the acts they committed, and how the church acted to cover up their misdeeds.
Without assessing these secret files, many victims risk being denied the chance to file their cases in court before the filing window closes. By releasing these files now, each victim can exercise their rights and claim a long-awaited sense of justice against their abusers and the church officers that turned a blind eye. It is time for the church to be truly transparent and support victims, not the predator priests.
