The New York Child Victims Act is now law.  It is great news for victims but it also creates many new issues for these same people.  Prior to passage of the CVA, victims had to file their civil cases before they turned 23 years old.  Of course, most survivors of child sexual abuse did not meet this overly restrictive deadline.  Having no legal recourse, many victims have spent decades trying to move on and suppress these memories.  Now seemingly overnight, anyone who was sexually abused as a child in New York and the ability to file a civil lawsuit and […]

A day care worker at Minnieland Academy in Bristow, Virginia, Taylor Boykin, was arrested last week after being accused of sexually assaulting four children over the course of a year. A raid was executed at that facility, but recent reports have surfaced that the issue may not be contained to this location. Though there is no indication that Boykin’s transgressions took place beyond the Bristow location, the operator of the academy has previously dealt with allegations of abuse at several of its other locations. Two teachers at a Minnieland Academy location in Manassas were accused of abusive behavior in a […]

The former doctor for the USA gymnastics team, Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday for multiple sex crimes, capping an extraordinary seven-day hearing that drew more than 150 young women to publicly confront him.  The opportunity for these brave young women to confront their abuser is part of the healing process.  But in this case, like many others I handle, the perpetrator can not abuse for decades without help from the institutions.  The criminal case is about holding the abuser accountable.  The civil case is about holding the institution that enabled the abuser accountable.  […]
