Jeff Herman of Herman Law – Founder

As the founder and managing partner of namesake Herman Law, Jeff Herman has devoted his professional life to seeking justice for victims of sexual assault, rape, abuse, and sexual exploitation. As a commercial litigator in the late 1990’s, Jeff Herman was deeply moved by the discovery that a referred woman’s autistic son was abused in his pre-school. Upon further personal investigation, it was discovered that the child’s abuse happened at the hands of an employee, who was also a convicted pedophile. Immediately, Herman recognized his calling, and the scope of his work, as well as his practice, shifted toward specializing […]

Jeff Herman, Esq. writes about Comedy and Tragedy: The Downfall of Bill Cosby, America’s Dad

I hear this response all the time, and it is my honor to help survivors seek their own justice.  My work is exclusively civil – I do not handle the criminal prosecution of sex offenders where the end result is a restriction of liberty, most often jail time. Instead, I use my skills in civil litigation, often bringing lawsuits alleging negligence, against the institutions that employ sexual perpetrators that had a duty to protect their clients from these dangerous members of the community. . The bad news, however, is that there is more work to be done. Undertones of “rape […]

Four Women Accuse New York’s Attorney General of Physical Abuse

On Monday, four women accused Eric Schneiderman, New York State Attorney General, of physical assault. All of the women admitted that they had been romantically involved with Schneiderman, but the violence was not consensual. Just hours after reports went out in The New Yorker, Schneiderman resigned, yet he continues to contest the allegations. Schneiderman held a prominent role in the #MeToo movement and has made a career going against this type of abuse, but he hypocritically re-victimizes women that are empowered enough to come forward.

Amazon, You Need to Take “Cosby” Off Prime Video Right Now

Someone at Amazon missed a very important memo. One week ago, Bill Cosby was convicted of sexual assault. Earlier today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted to expel Cosby and Roman Polanski, another convicted rapist. Yet inexplicably, three of Cosby’s television shows are still available for streaming on Amazon Prime. And Polanski’s film “The Ninth Gate” is on HBO Now. Why? Seriously, why? Who still wants to watch the work of men convicted of rape? I’m not in the TV/film business, but there can’t possibly be a market for that. In the #MeToo era, where powerful Hollywood men […]

Jeff Herman: Your Child’s Champion

Why do it.  For the children.  Jeff Herman didn’t go to law school to become an advocate for survivors of sex crimes. For a number of years, Jeff was a commercial litigation, meaning he represented businesses large in small in negotiations and at trial.  He was good at what he did, great even.  But he eventually realized that representing corporations was neither rewarding nor fulfilling. Everything changed twenty years ago.  Two parents reached out to Jeff and asked for help.  They shared with him every mother and father’s worst nightmare: their four-year old child came home and said “Mr. Dan” touched […]

Nassar sentenced to 40-175 years, now is time for victims to file civil cases to hold the institutions accountable

The former doctor for the USA gymnastics team, Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday for multiple sex crimes, capping an extraordinary seven-day hearing that drew more than 150 young women to publicly confront him.  The opportunity for these brave young women to confront their abuser is part of the healing process.  But in this case, like many others I handle, the perpetrator can not abuse for decades without help from the institutions.  The criminal case is about holding the abuser accountable.  The civil case is about holding the institution that enabled the abuser accountable.  […]
