Catholic Cardinal George Pell Jailed Following Sexual Abuse Conviction

Yesterday, Cardinal George Pell, the highest ranking Catholic clergy member ever convicted of sexually assaulting children, was jailed in Melbourne, Australia. Cardinal Pell faces up to 50 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually assaulting two children. Gov. Cuomo Signs Child Victims Act in New York

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Child Victims Act into law Thursday morning, marking a massive victory for survivors of sexual abuse. The new law creates a one-year window in which victims of childhood sexual abuse can file a civil lawsuit no matter how long ago they were abused. Additionally, the Child Victims Act extends the statute of limitations on civil claims going forward, allowing victims until age 55 to file lawsuits. New York Passes Child Victims Act

After years of a hard fought battle, survivors of sexual abuse in New York have finally won. For the first time, those who were sexually abused long ago will finally have a voice. On Monday, New York legislature passed the Child Victims Act that will allow survivors to seek civil justice until age 55, from what was previously cut off at age 23. More importantly, the Child Victims Act will create a one year window in which victims of sexual abuse can file lawsuits no matter how long ago they were abused. Archbishop Dolan Seeks to Avoid the “Look-back Window” of Child Victims Act

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York wrote an op-ed for the Daily News in which he expresses concern for the Child Victims Act “breaking” the Catholic Church.  He advocates for a modified bill that would not have a “look-back window.”  The “look-back” window is critical to the legislation, as it will allow adult survivors  to file claims that would otherwise be barred by the statute of limitations.  Archbishop Dolan seeks as a substitute a program to compensate survivors that will mirror the one implemented by Dioceses in New York State.  Attorney Jeff Herman is critical of Archbishop […]
